Sergei Rachmaninov

Based on Chopin's C minor Prelude, Opus 28/20, this is Rachmaninov's first published large-scale solo piano work. Overall, it is an elaborate and interesting work that exhibits a wide variety of mood and pianistic invention. The first eleven variations follow the form of the theme fairly closely, with a only a small amount of liberty. Variation No. 12 (described by the composer as optional) departs radically from the theme. It begins as a fugue, then develops into an improvisatory cadenza. Variations Nos. 13 through 18, even less tied to the theme, grow increasingly longer and more complex. The final variations, Nos. 19 through 22, are played continuously as a Finale and culminate in a typical virtuosic tour-de-force. The only fault the set may have is its lack of cohesion. Even in the most capable hands, it tends to be somewhat long-winded and rambling. There an abundance of interesting material, but Rachmaninov fails to organize it effectively.
